December

Happy December!

I sent home a letter last week inviting students to ring the bell with me on Monday, December 14th at L&M from 4-5.  Students will need to have their own transportation to and from the event and a permission slip turned in.  I would love to have a great turn out!  The students seem really excited about it.

Next week, we also have our annual Winter Sing on Tuesday, December 15.  Please bring your child here at 5:45.  I might not be able to be here any earlier than 5:45, so please keep that in mind.  The kids have been working very hard with Mrs. Wood and we have even practiced a couple of times in our classroom.  They sound amazing!!  Can't wait for them to perform for you!

Have a great week!

Veterans Day

Happy Monday Morning!

A couple of things for this week....

Tomorrow is the Unit 2 math test.  We went through the review today as a class, but it wouldn't hurt to go through it again with the students tonight.  We also started our Revolutionary War Unit today during our ELA time.

We have early release on Wednesday as well as a Veterans Day Program happening at 9:00am in the Intermediate School gym.  It is open to the public and every single one of you is invited to attend.

Report cards will go home with your child on Thursday.

The vocabulary words for this week are gaze, glimmer, glimpse, radiant, and mingle.

Have a great week!

Letter from Mr. Olson

2nd Quarter Reading Contest and First Quarter Reward Party

During 2nd quarter, students are participating in a reading challenge called I SPY A GOOD READER. The students in grades 3-5 are asked to read Accelerated Reader (AR) books of their interest and at their reading level and upon completion of a book, they will take a 5-10 question test to earn points toward their AR goal. Teachers will set goals for each student, and they will monitor each student's reading and comprehension level. Students will be rewarded for their efforts.

During conferences, I gave you a paper titled Renaissance Home Connect;this has your login information to check on your child's Accelerated Reader progress. You will find a link to the website on our school website under Student Computer Programs. The contest begins on November 5th and ends on January 22nd.

Here's more information:

Individual Student Goals: Students will read AR books, take tests, and earn points to meet 100% of goal while averaging 85% (at least) comprehension on all tests.

School-wide Goal: Read 115 million words by January 22. Average 85% comprehension (last year we were at 84.4%!).

Incentives:
  • 50% of goal: TRYING!
    • Students earn his/her Thumbprint Card and 5 thumbprints
  • 80% of goal: SPYING!
    • Students continue to fill Thumbprint Card
    • Students earn Secret Agent Photo
  • 100% of goal: Private EYE-ING!
    • Student fills Thumbprint Card
    • Student earns Let's Read Coupon
    • Student earns Spy Gear
    • Student earns a ticket to the "I Spy Disguise Party!"

Our school-wide reading contest promotes reading and fun and is a great way to teach kids about goal setting! Please encourage reading in the home and help your child meet his/her goal. If you have questions please contact me or Mrs. Laird (Reading Coach).

Also, tomorrow is the first quarter reward party.   Every student in our class made it this quarter which I believe is a first for me!  I've never had a class of students who all qualified.  This is great news!  Popcorn has been generously donated by the popcorn shop in town and we have some fabulous volunteers coming in to bag it all up for us.  Please read the letter going home tonight for more information.  Students can bring in a beverage to drink as long as it has a cap so that it can easily be sealed.

Handouts

I am going to try to post photos of most handouts to help keep the communication as clear as possible.  The following handout will be going home tonight.

Red Ribbon Week Next Week

This letter is going home tonight, but sometimes it is easier to keep track of a blog link than it is a piece of paper.  :)

Veterans Day Essay

Sorry for two posts in one day, but I forgot to mention the Veterans Day Essay Contest.  Every year the 4th graders participate in a contest about Veterans Day.  Your student isn't required to participate, but they are highly encouraged to do so.  This is an at-home activity and we will not have any time to work on it at school.  The winners (2 per year) read their essays aloud at the Veterans Day program at the Intermediate School.  Their names are also added to the plaques  posted outside the gymnasium doors. Please ask your child to consider participating this year.  All essays are due November 2.

Thanks!

Fire Safety and Halloween Party

Hello!

It was wonderful to see so many of you last night at conferences.  Miss Morgan started teaching full time this week and she continues to do a great job!  We had the Hayward Fire Dept come talk to our students this week about fire safety.  Miss Morgan even got to ride the bucket of the fire truck to the top!

Our vocabulary words of the week are elaborate, extraordinary, massive, minuscule, and phenomenal.  In math, we continue to plug along in Unit 2.  Remember to check out the tabs at the top of the blog if your student needs help.  YouTube often has great math video tutorials, too!  In ELA, we are learning about Body Systems.  You will hear a lot more about body systems as the quarter carries on.

Our Halloween party will be on Friday, October 30th.   We have volunteers coming down from the high school to help facilitate all of the fun.  Mrs. Cummings' class will be joining our class for the fun.   As a part of the fun and and in hopes of keeping the massive amount of sugar down a little bit, we are making a classroom trail mix.   I am sending home a letter tonight about it.  I will also be emailing a letter to the parents who have given the school or myself a current email address.   For the first time ever, I am attempting to use Google Drive to help the sign up process.  Please click PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR TRAIL MIX.  Thank you so much!   Let me know what you think of using email/Google Drive to communicate and sign up for these types of things.

Thanks so much!  Have a great week!

Week of Oct 5-9

Hello!

We had a busy and fun week last week with our tests and our field trip.  Unit 1 math tests are going home tonight (Monday).  All incorrect problems need to be corrected and corrections should be made in pen.  They also need to be signed by a parent/guardian along with assignment notebooks.  There is also some spelling homework and an additional math sheet tonight.

Also, there is a big possibility that we will be headed on our second field trip this Friday.  Details will follow soon.

The vocabulary words for the week are dormant, foliage, vivid, transform, and ravine.

Make it a great week!!

Vocabulary

Also, see post below.  :)

Log-a-Load and More

Tomorrow is our Log-a-Load field trip.  It will be in Seeley and although the weather looks beautiful, it will be outside, so please dress your child appropriately to be in the woods.  It might be a little cold in the morning.  Lunch is provided.  We are leaving school around 8:40 and plan to return around 2:00.  I am super excited and I know the kids are too!  :)

Also, I will *try* my best to kick out a calendar like this every month, but I can't promise I will always be able to deliver as it does take some time.  I would love some feedback as to whether this calendar is useful or not for you at home.  I will try to include anything major that I know about on the calendar and will probably even update it as the month continues.

Have a great week!

Log-a-Load

Hello!

I wanted to reach out and let you know about a cool opportunity that our students will be taking part in next week.  On Thursday, the 4th and 5th graders will take a bus to the Seeley to an event called Log-a-Load sponsored by the Northwest Chapter of the Great Lakes Timber Professional Association.  Angie Woodburn of Ericson Logging said, "The first purpose [of Log-a-Load] is to do a charitable harvest and raise money for the Miracle Children's Hospital in the State of Wisconsin.  The second purpose is to educate our area youth and teachers about the forest industry and the impact that this industry has on our local economy and forests."  During this day trip, students will learn from many area experts about a wide variety of topics.  We have never gone on this field trip before, so it will be new to everyone including teachers!  There will be a letter going home very soon with more information about this very fun, educational day, so be watching for it.  I don't know any additional information at this time, but I will keep you informed as I know more.

Have a great night!

Sept 21-25

Hello!

We survived our first full week of school and it feels good!  Every week, your son/daughter will have a spelling list and 5 vocabulary words.  The vocabulary words are different than their spelling lists.  All students must look up the work in the dictionary and put the definition in their own words on the "Define It!" sheet.  We will always go over the definitions before students make their flashcards.  Students use index cards as their flashcards and then they all go to an index card box to save for future reference.

Miss Morgan (student teacher) will begin teaching spelling full time and she will also pick up one math lesson on Thursday.

I hope you all have a great weekend!  Your kids looked absolutely adorable today for pictures.  :)

Now...... Ladies and Gentlemen....  without further ado I present...

Week of Sept 14-18

Greetings!

Today is the first full week of the 2015-16 school year and we have a LOT to accomplish.  Students will finish all pretesting this week including timed reads, spelling pretests, STAR math/reading, etc.  Tomorrow, September 15, will be the first official day of Reading Interventions in our Learning Lab.  The interventions will take place every Monday - Thursday from 10:00-10:45 in the morning.  Some of our math interventions have already begun, but it will be in full swing tomorrow from 8:30-9:00.

I will be sending home a Lyrics2Learn username/password information sheet this week.  However, if  you lose it, don't panic.  The website is www.lyrics2learn.com.  The teacher name is: Marienfeld.  The username is your child's first name and last name together like this: FirstLast.  The password is GoCanes.  The important thing to remember is that your child should sing along out loud at least three times before taking a quiz.  The purpose of the website is to help build reading fluency and, in turn, comprehension in an engaging way.  The kids love it!  It is pretty catchy and super fun to listen to them!

Please be sure to turn in all forms to the office if you haven't already done so.  We can't wait to show you our music video, but I need all forms turned in before I can post it.  :)

UPCOMING REMINDERS:
      * Hurricane Apparel orders (forms/info went home on Friday) are DUE TOMORROW
*Picture day is on FRIDAY!  Please let me know if you need a new form.
*Book orders are due October 1.
*Homecoming is on Friday, September 25
       * Parent/Teacher Conferences are on the evenings of October 12 and October 19

Please email me with any questions/concerns.

Make it a great day!

Week of Sept 8-11

Hello!

We are off to a shining start!  I feel so luck to have this group of kids.   They have been a joy so far!  This week we will continue to learn routines and how to be in the 4th grade.

Last week, you should have received something about Classroom Dojo from your student.  It is an online behavior management system that I am going to use at least through the duration of the first quarter.   Please ask your student about it.  You can also check it out by clicking here.

Starting tonight (Tuesday, September 8), you can expect some form of math homework to come home almost nightly.  We will not start our new spelling curriculum until next week.  We will only have formal spelling lessons during weeks that we meet all five days.  To clarify, we didn't meet Monday this week, so we won't start spelling until next week when we meet M-F.  We briefly began our ELA unit in class today and we will dive deeper into in as the week goes on.   We also started Writer's Workshop this morning.  It has been a BUSY day!

Your child has had the opportunity to check out a couple of books from the library, so please encourage nightly reading.  Reading out loud makes a HUGE difference if your son/daughter wants to strengthen their reading abilities.  It's simple, free, and very effective.

Speaking of reading and improving skills, please ask your son/daughter about a new program we talked about today called Lyrics2Learn.  It's a program that the 4th grade uses that combines catchy music and reading to make engaging reading practice.  I will send home more information about that later this week, so be looking for it!   :)

Please make sure all forms from the school are turned in asap.  Also, if you get the chance, please complete the 1,000,000 words or less "assignment" and turn in to me.  You can even email it if that's easier to bmarienfeld@hayward.k12.wi.us.

Picture day is next Friday, September 18!

Make it a wonderful week!

Hello!

Welcome to our class blog!  This blog will tell you all of the latest happenings and even have some homework help and other important information.  I plan to update this blog once a week at least.  In addition to all of the information and resources already found here, I plan to start a student feature section where I can brag about all of the awesome kids in our room.  From time to time, I might even ask students to guest write for us and let us know how their year is going from a student's perspective.  :)

Bookmark this site and plan to visit often.

Thanks for stopping by!  I can't wait to work with you and your child!!  I love my job!  :D

Valentines and Vocabulary

Hello!  It's been a crazy week over at the Intermediate School!  We have had a parent reading workshop, early release, jump rope for heart, the book fair and more!  Whew.  It's been a very fun week.  I just wanted to tell you how incredibly impressed I am with some of the vocabulary games turned in!  Lots of kids worked extremely hard and it shows.  On that note, however, I also had 11 students not turn in their game today.  :(  Students who do not complete their game will not participate in our class Valentine's Day Party scheduled for Wednesday.

I also wanted to pass along this great resource.  Sometimes I am nervous to allow children to use search engines like Google.com to research something because you never know what might pop up.  If you ever feel that way at home, you can direct your child to go to www.kidrex.org.  It is a search engine made just for kids!  They can search the internet without inappropriate content popping up.

Have a great weekend!
